Theme

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2019 with its twenty-nine members. NATO with expanded missions and new members remains a significant actor for the security of its allies and beyond. As the Deputy Secretary-General of NATO Rose Gotemoeller acknowledges, “there are significant challenges facing NATO – from dealing with an aggressive Russia, to the fight against terrorism, to the proliferation of cyber threats, and to differences among allies.”  In light of these challenges, this special issue aims to open the debate on NATO’s challenges and opportunities at its 70th birthday.

Subject Coverage

As the main objective of this special issue is to address NATO’s ongoing adaptation in light of emerging global challenges, historical contributions can only be welcomed to serve as the background reading with contemporary relevance. In addition, although Turkey remains critical for NATO operations – and therefore related articles are welcome – the scope of this issue is broader than NATO’s relations with any particular ally. Therefore, this special issue aims to discuss wide-ranging challenges NATO is facing at its 70th anniversary with references to strategic, political, military, economic, and intra-alliance dimensions that are likely to remain on the allies’ agendas such as Alliance cohesion, burden sharing, enlargement, and cooperative security with partners. Accordingly, the coverage of this special issue of Perceptions includes, but is not limited to, the following subjects:

  1. NATO Adaptation (Transformation, Enlargement, MAP)
  2. NATO Operations, Crisis Management (Kosovo, Afghanistan, Libya etc.)
  3. NATO’s Counter-terrorism Efforts
  4. NATO’s relations with other IOs (UN, EU, OSCE, AU etc.)
  5. NATO and Hybrid Threats (Russia, Ukraine, Baltics etc.)
  6. NATO and Partnerships (PfP, ICI, Mediterranean Dialogue etc.)
