A conference entitled ”Humanitarian Diplomacy: Theory and Perspectives From the field” was organized on 5-7 December in İstanbul Şehir University, in cooperation by the Center For Strategic Research (SAM), Ankara Center For Economic and Political Research (ASEM), Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), the Department of Political Science & International Relations and the Center for Modern Turkish Studies at İstanbul Şehir University. A reception was hosted by SAM before the conference in the honour of participants.
Assoc.Prof. Dr. Mesut Özcan, Chairman of SAM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Akif Kireççi, Chairman of ASEM, and Prof Dr. Ahmet Ademoğlu, Rector of İstanbul Şehir University delivered the opening speeches and Metin Çorabatır from Association for Research Centre of Asylum and Migration (ARCAM), Suna Gülfer Ihlamur from Marmara University, Işıl Acehan from İpek University, Fulya Memişoğlu from Çukurova University, Pınar Akpınar from Yalova University, İzzet Şahin from the Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH), Dilayda Gizem Çelik from Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), Rahman Nurdun from Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), Mojtaba Mahdavi from University of Alberta, Jelika Stefanovic-Stambuk from University of Belgrade, Melissa Patel and Mark Wild from Fordham University, Bruce Gilley from Portland State University and Jinan Bastaki from University of London made representations.
During the conference, issues such as humanitarian diplomacy in theoretical perspective, Turkey’s humanitarian diplomacy, Turkish NGO’s activities in addressing humanitarian crises, refugee and asylum problems with a special focus on Palestine and Syria were discussed. The conference was concluded with the dinner hosted by SAM.
