A conference titled "Geopolitics of Energy: What Will Future Bring" was organized in cooperation by Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey, Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA), Yıldız Technical University, Florence University from Italy and SAM on 16-18 May 2014 in Istanbul at Yıldız Technical University.
Message of H.E. Taner Yıldız, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, who was not able to attend due to his emergency duties after the tragic incident at Soma mine, was read at the opening of the conference. The conference was honored by H.E. Murat Mercan, Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey, who gave a speech at the opening session. SAM Chairman Prof. Ali Resül Usul also spoke to the participating audience at the opening forum.
Participants of the event included Turkish energy bureaucrats, experts and press members as well as academicians from US, Italy, Russian Federation, Azerbaijan and Israel. Speeches and presentations at the conference dwelled upon the constantly increasing need for energy by both developed and developing economies, and several methods and strategies developed by states to meet this requirement for sustainable growth, including political, economic and environmental impacts of new production technologies towards productivity and efficiency such as shale oil and gas extraction.
Presentations of the event are planned to be shared with general public by getting compiled into a special issue of "Perceptions" journal, SAM's regular academic publication.
