The SAM delegation headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mesut Özcan, Acting Chairman of the Center for Strategic Research, and cosisting Prof. Dr. Mensur Akgün, Chairman of Global Political Trends Center of Istanbul Kültür University, Dr. Silvia Tiryaki, Deputy Chairman of Global Political Trends Center of Istanbul Kültür University, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şaban Kardaş from TOBB-ETU attended the conference entitled “Turkey Facing Regional System in Flux: Between Political Transformation in the Middle East and Economic Crises in Europe & Turkey: International Trade and Demographic Issues" on 7 October 2013 in Ottawa, Canada. The conference, in which Assoc. Prof. Dr. Patrick George from the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs of Ottowa University also made a presentation, was followed by nearly sixty participants consisting of academics, diplomats, bureaucrats and scholars.
Prof. Dr. Akgün examined Turkey- EU relations and discourses on axis shift by summarizing Turkish foreign policy in general at the session which he also moderated, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kardaş addressed the perceptions regarding Turkey’s foreign policy, developments in the Middle East and North Africa and Turkey’s relations with them on a political and theoretical basis. Dr. Tiryaki’s account on the Cyprus issue and her views regarding a solution on the island was followed by Prof. Georges’ presentation on policies urging the Turkish economy and population growth and the effects of demographical developments on the economy and Prof. Özcan’s general assesment on Turkish foreign policy.
The delegation responded to the questions from the audience on liberal-realistic aspects of Turkish foreign policy, freedom of press, critics taking place in the foreign press concerning our governemnts foreign policy practices, Turkey’s changing policy in its relations with Syria, and the propable advantages of accepting immigrants like Canada instead of policies urging population growth in the Q&A session.
Our delegation also responded to the questions regarding recent developments in Turkey and its region at the meeting held under the Chatham House Rules at the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A Memorandum of Understanding aiming to improve academic cooperation between SAM and Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs was signed by our Center’s Acting Chairman Prof. Mesut Özcan and Prof. Andre Plourde, Dean of Carleton University’s Faculty of Public Affairs, within the framework of the visit.
