Seminar entitled “Turkey, Spain and the EU: A Common Agenda” organised by SAM, The Barcelona Centre for International Affairs (CIDOB) and The International Policy and Leadership Institute (IPLI) on 10 September 2013 in Barcelona.
Afif Demirkıran, MP and Co-Chair of Turkey-Spain Joint Parliamentary Committee, Emir Salim Yüksel, Turkey’s Consul General to Barcelona, Assoc. Prof. Mesut Özcan, Acting Chairman of SAM and Assoc. Prof. Şaban Kardaş, Advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Diplomacy Academy, attended the Seminar. In addition, some of the other pre-eminent participants of the Seminar were; Antonio Martin da Cruz, Ambassador, Foreign Minister of Portugal and Former Chairman in Office of OSCE, Carles Gasoliba, Chairman of the Board of CIDOB, Former Senator, Chairman of the Senate Committee for the Economy and Treasury and an MP in the European Council and Enrique Mora, Director of Policy Planning, Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and former Head of the Private Office of the High Representative of the European Union,
During the seminar, relations between the European Union and Turkey, Spanish and Turkish priorities in the Middle East and North of Africa were discussed in detail. Furthermore, the seminar has given a substantial opportunity to clearly explain the basic parameters of Turkish foreign policy towards the aforementioned regions, thereby help to overcome negative perceptions within Europe.
Given the participation of high level European bureaucrats, representatives of think-tanks, and Turkish Phd students in Barcelona, and intense interest shown by the media, the Seminar has been a serious tool in terms of Turkish Public Diplomacy.
