SAM hosted Ian Lesser, Executive Director of the Transatlantic Center, GMF’s Brussels Office and Senior Director for Foreign and Security Policy at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, in Ankara on 14 January 2014. On the margins of Ian Lesser’s visit to Ankara, a around table discussion meeting was held with the presence of high ranking diplomats, bureaucrats and academics from prominent universities and think-tanks based in Turkey.
Initially, Ian Lesser delivered a speech on the title of “Transatlantic Relations and the Turkey-US Alliance in the new era” where he touched upon the ongoing political transformation process in the Middle East and North Africa as well as pros and cons of Turkey’s policies in the face these tectonic changes. Moreover, he assessed the current state of Turkey-US relations by refering to the cruciality of diversifying the scope of partnership with a view to future-oriented vision.
Subsequently, US’s foreign policy towards Middle East, Russia and Asia-Pacific was elaborated in detail in the discussion part of the meeting.
