From Balkan Wars to Balkan Peace Project

Within the scope of “From Balkan Wars to Balkan Peace Project”, several significant workshops entitled “Regional Ownership and Inclusiveness” in Skopje, “Regional Re-integration” in Sarajevo, “EU Integration Process” in Tirana and Sofia, “Deepening the Institutional Architecture of the South East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) As a Regional Cooperation Scheme” in Belgrad were realized by the Center for Strategic Research (SAM) all the year round. The main aims of these workshops were to create a common understanding among the peoples of the region, to constitute an alternative perspective for regional cooperation, and to re-evaluate the results of Balkan Wars in the 100th anniversary. Several intellectuals, politicians, think-tanks experts and media representatives participated to these workshops and regional peace initiatives, ways for cooperation and historical facts were topics of discussion during the workshops.

As the last cycle of these events, an international conference was held in Istanbul on 18-19 October 2012, under the auspices of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Davutoglu with participation of Ministers from Balkan Countries and participants from other countries in cooperation by SAM and the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities. The keynote speech is delivered by Prof. Kemal Karpat and the program continued with the speeches of the Foreign Ministers of Balkan countries.

“Reconsidering Balkan Wars after 100 Years: Regional and Global Dimensions”, “Domestic and External Challenges”, “Regional Ownership, Integration and EU”, “Global Actors and the Balkans”, and “Turkey and the Balkans” were the panel titles in the conference.

Participants from different Balkan countries stated that this event has served efficiently to the unity of understanding among the people of region, overcoming the prejudices, and working towards a better future and regional cooperation.
