Volume I Perceptions Dec 1996 - Feb 1997
The last issue of our journal in 1996 consists of 1 book review and 7 articles. Anna Masala's book review on The Future of Europe: Its Christian Roots is featured in this issue. Fred Tanner explores proposals for a Mediterranean Pact to address security challenges, focusing on soft security measures, preventive diplomacy, and confidence-building initiatives within the Barcelona Declaration framework. Nicolae Mıcu discusses the Black Sea Economic Co-operation (BSEC) as both a mechanism for economic progress and a confidence-building measure among the participating nations. It highlights how economic cooperation is seen as a means to foster peace, stability, and prosperity in the Black Sea region. Selçuk Korkud explains the significance of inter-religious dialogue, particularly focusing on the interactions between Pope John Paul II and Yunus Emre, a Turkish mystical poet in his work. It highlights the efforts of both the Catholic Church and the Muslim world to foster understanding, tolerance, and cooperation between different religious communities Rauf Denktaş criticizes past UN resolutions and calls for a reevaluation of the approach to resolving the conflict. Denktas emphasizes the need to uphold the rule of law established in the 1960 treaties and argues against Cyprus's accession to the European Union until Turkey is also a member. Nur Bilge Criss provides a comprehensive analysis of the development of terrorism in Turkey, the strategies employed to counter it, and the broader international implications of the issue in her article Stephen Blank focuses on Russia's strategic interests and policies in the Middle East and Gulf region during the mid-1990s. The author outlines several factors driving Russian policy in the Middle East, including the need for security on its frontiers, economic interests (such as arms and oil sales), and a desire to counter US dominance in the region.
