Volume XI Perceptions Spring 2006

We featured 5 different articles in this issue of our journal. In her article, Pınar İpek argues that there is no political determination to create a fully integrated internal energy market and a coherent external energy policy in the EU. This undermines not only the EU energy security strategy but also the planned energy hub in Turkey. Özgehan Şenyuva aims to demonstrate Turkish public opinion in different sectors regarding Turkey’s bid for European Union membership based on the data collected from late 1990s until 2004. Matan Chorev explains that differences in counterterrorism approaches between Europe and the United States can be understood by looking at their strategic cultures.He introduces the concept of strategic culture and examines how terrorism impacted the Atlantic relationship after the Cold War. Birgül Demirtaş-coşkun deals with the issue of what kind of a role the EU plays in the present global world order. She argues that the EU began to enjoy more self-confidence because of its increasing political integration since the early 1990. Mehmet Özkan analyzes how, after the Cold War, regional powers are pursuing more independent foreign policies. He introduces the idea of "pivotal middle powers" and argues that they can play crucial roles in shaping a new global order through niche diplomacy.
